Open Society vs. Closed Society: Why One Vision Built America — And Why the Other Is Being Pushed on Us

A working father in Britain wakes up every morning, kisses his kids goodbye, and heads to his job. He pays his taxes, follows the rules, and tries to give his family a decent life.
Yet this year, for the first time in British history, the money his government spends on welfare and benefits now exceeds the entire revenue collected from income taxes.
£333 billion in benefits.
£331 billion in income tax revenue.
The system is no longer paying for itself. The safety net has become the main budget item — and the people who built the country are left wondering how much longer they can carry it.
This is not a distant foreign problem. It is the direct result of an “Open Society” model that prioritizes maximum openness, high migration, and expansive welfare programs without strong guardrails. The same model that George Soros and the Open Society Foundations have spent more than $32 billion promoting around the world — including here in America.
What Is an “Open Society”?
Philosopher Karl Popper coined the term after surviving fascism and communism. He argued that the healthiest societies allow criticism, debate, and change.
George Soros adopted this as his life’s mission. Through the Open Society Foundations, his network funds policies that emphasize:
Open borders and high levels of migration.
Reduced incarceration and progressive criminal justice.
Expanded voting access with fewer identification requirements.
Global institutions and cosmopolitan ideals over strong national sovereignty.
The stated goal is noble on paper: prevent tyranny by keeping societies fluid, diverse, and “open” to new ideas and people. We cannot blame Soros for wanting to save the world from another Holocaust — that horror shaped his entire worldview, and his desire to prevent it is understandable.
What Is a “Closed Society”?
In Popper’s and Soros’s framing, a closed society emphasizes strong national identity, strict rule of law, limited rapid cultural or demographic change, and putting its own citizens first.
North Korea is the extreme example of a closed society that fails — authoritarian, stagnant, and oppressive.
But America’s Founders designed something different: a constitutional republic. It is “closed” in the sense that power is limited by law, citizenship is clearly defined, and the people (not global elites) are sovereign. It is open to opportunity because it rewards work, merit, and assimilation.
This balance created the greatest opportunity society in human history.
The Results Are In — And They Don’t Work Everywhere
The United Kingdom provides a clear case study. Once a proud example of Western democracy, the UK has embraced open-society policies on migration and welfare. The results are now undeniable:

Similar patterns are visible across much of the European Union, where open-border and expansive welfare policies have strained budgets and social cohesion.
In the United States, the same networks pushing these policies have spent billions on:
Progressive district attorneys and criminal-justice “reform” that correlated with homicide spikes in multiple major cities.
Opposition to voter-ID laws and expansion of mail-in voting.
Advocacy for policies that extend benefits to non-citizens while American families struggle with rising costs.
These are not conspiracy theories. They are documented in Open Society Foundations grant reports and OpenSecrets.org data.
An open society may function in some European contexts under different rules and cultures. But in America, it does not mix with our Constitution. Our Founders gave us a system that is open to opportunity but closed to chaos. When one billionaire’s vision collides with that constitutional framework, the results are measurable strain on taxpayers, safety, and trust.
People Are Waking Up — And the Train Has Already Left the Station
Millions of Americans are now seeing the patterns. They are realizing that generous programs meant to help have become magnets that discourage self-reliance and strain the very system that made America the destination in the first place.
The train has already left the station — policies have been implemented, budgets have been stretched, and trust has been eroded.
The only way to correct course is through the elections. We must focus on 2026 and beyond with clear eyes: elect officials who will enforce existing law, prioritize American citizens and legal residents, and restore the constitutional balance our Founders intended.

An open society is strongest when it is anchored in a constitutional framework that says “yes” to opportunity and “no” to chaos. The UK example shows what happens when openness outpaces responsibility. North Korea shows what happens when a closed society has no constitution.
America’s Founders gave us the perfect balance. Our job is to protect it — and clean up the track before the next generation pays the price.
