Remote Area Medical: When Americans Help Americans in Need

On Sunday, April 5, 2026, I watched a 60 Minutes segment that stopped me in my tracks.
It featured Remote Area Medical (RAM) — a remarkable nonprofit that brings free medical, dental, and vision care directly to Americans who have fallen through the cracks. In parking lots, fairgrounds, and remote communities across our country, volunteer doctors, dentists, and nurses set up massive pop-up clinics and treat thousands of people who simply cannot afford care.
These are not abstract statistics. These are our fellow citizens — working families, veterans, seniors, and children — who line up before dawn for a chance at basic healthcare that many of us take for granted.
RAM’s History and Impact
Founded in 1985 by Stan Brock, RAM has served over 1 million patients and delivered more than $200 million in free care. In 2025 alone, they helped nearly 33,000 patients with over $16.6 million in free services.
Real Patient & Volunteer Stories
Patients describe life-changing moments — from receiving dentures that restored their smile and dignity to having painful infections treated that literally saved their lives. Volunteers often say spending time at a RAM clinic restores their faith in humanity.
Telehealth Expansion and Its Impact on Rural Health
RAM’s growing telehealth program is helping close the healthcare gap in rural America. Mobile telehealth units pair on-site nurses with remote doctors, enabling diagnosis, prescriptions, and follow-up care in areas where traveling to a hospital is difficult or impossible. Early results show strong patient satisfaction and better management of chronic conditions.

Yet we continue to see a troubling contrast.
While organizations like RAM work tirelessly with limited resources, Congress routinely approves earmarks for expensive artwork and non-essential projects. Why is it easier for politicians to fund luxury items than to support organizations helping struggling American families?
This is exactly why we must build a better system — one that rewards citizen-led initiatives with transparency and support.
We thank CBS 60 Minutes for shining a light on this vital work with their April 5 segment. Their coverage has helped RAM grow and inspired countless volunteers and donors.
