The parent is right.
In nearly every state, enrolling a child in public school requires multiple forms of identification and proof of residency. Yet some of the same voices who demand those documents for kindergarten fight tooth and nail against the simplest voter ID requirement.
Why does this double standard exist?
The answer is not racism, suppression, or any of the emotional slogans. It is money — concentrated, unaccountable money from a single network that has spent billions shaping election policy.
The Documented Facts
School enrollment: Every state requires proof of identity, age (birth certificate), residency (utility bill, lease), and immunizations. These rules protect children and ensure public resources go to actual residents. No serious person calls this “disenfranchising” parents.
Voter ID: Many states require photo ID for in-person voting. Opponents claim it burdens minorities and the poor. Yet the same citizens already show ID for banking, flying, buying alcohol, picking up prescriptions, and — as the parent notes — enrolling their own children in school.
The disconnect is not logic. It is funding.
One Group’s Billions at Work
Since 1979, George Soros and the Open Society Foundations have poured more than $32 billion into U.S. causes. A significant portion has gone to organizations and PACs that:
Oppose strict voter-ID laws
Push expansive mail-in voting with minimal verification
Fund groups that frame basic ID requirements as “suppressive”
These grants are public record (Open Society Foundations reports and OpenSecrets.org data). The same network that funds progressive district attorneys and criminal-justice “reform” also backs election-policy organizations that fight voter-ID at every turn.
This is not a conspiracy. It is concentrated private money shaping public policy on the most fundamental right in our republic — choosing our leaders.
Why We Need Antitrust-Style Rules for Political Funding
In every other major industry we already have antitrust laws to prevent any single player from dominating the market and distorting competition.
A Brief History of Antitrust Laws
In the late 1800s, during the Gilded Age, powerful “trusts” and monopolies (Standard Oil, railroads, U.S. Steel, American Tobacco) grew so large they crushed competition, fixed prices, and controlled entire industries. Public outrage led Congress to pass the first major federal antitrust law — the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890. It outlawed “every contract, combination, or conspiracy in restraint of trade” and any attempt to monopolize.
In 1911, the Supreme Court broke up Standard Oil (John D. Rockefeller) into 34 separate companies. In 1914, Congress passed the Clayton Antitrust Act and created the Federal Trade Commission to strengthen enforcement.
Major Examples of Antitrust in Action
Standard Oil (1911): Broken up after dominating 90% of U.S. oil refining through predatory pricing.
AT&T / “Ma Bell” (1982): Forced breakup of the national telephone monopoly. This single action unleashed massive competition, lower prices, and paved the way for the modern internet.
Microsoft (1998–2001): Sued for illegally maintaining a monopoly in PC operating systems.
Google (2024–2025): Federal court found Google illegally maintained a monopoly in online search and advertising.
These cases prove a simple truth: when any single entity gains too much power — whether in oil, telephones, software, or search — the government has a duty to step in and restore competition.
Politics Is the Ultimate Market
Politics is not just another industry — it is the arena that sets the rules for every other part of society: the economy, borders, schools, elections, and even who gets to vote.
When one network can spend $32 billion+ with almost no transparency or limits, it creates a political monopoly on influence that distorts democracy the same way corporate monopolies distort the economy.
That is not healthy democracy. It is why ordinary Americans feel the system is rigged.
We do not need to ban philanthropy. We need antitrust-style guardrails for political funding:
Full disclosure of all large-scale political grants and their downstream effects on election policy.
Limits on any single donor network’s ability to dominate the rules that govern voting and elections.
A return to common-sense standards that treat voting with the same seriousness we already apply to kindergarten enrollment.
